Betzwood, where Siegmund Lubin made films on a brewer's estate

Siegmund Lubin took over the brewer John F. Betz's country estate on the Schuylkill in 1912 and converted its buildings into one of the largest film production plants in the world, spread across roughly 350 acres. More than a hundred pictures were shot here, including a run of westerns filmed in Montgomery County rather than anywhere west of it. The studio shut down in 1923, and Pennsylvania's turn as a centre of American film making ended with it.
