North Carolina's first town, chartered in 1705, was also briefly home to its most famous resident when Blackbeard took the king's pardon in 1718 and settled here among officials who found him useful. He lasted a few months before going back to sea and being killed at Ocracoke. The town has a few hundred people, the state's oldest church, and has never much grown.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
