James Naismith had fourteen days to invent an indoor game that would not injure bored gymnasium students in winter. He nailed a peach basket to the balcony rail, wrote thirteen rules, and had to fetch a ladder after every score. Volleyball was invented four years later in Holyoke, ten miles up the river, as something gentler for businessmen.
