Eighty acres opened in 1899 and named for Maurice de Hirsch, the financier who paid to resettle Jews fleeing the Russian Empire. It is divided into roughly five hundred plots belonging to synagogues, family circles and landsmanshaftn, the mutual aid societies formed by immigrants from the same home town, so the gates read like a map of eastern Europe. In January 1960 vandals painted swastika slogans on 87 headstones and the grounds were fenced.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
