The Slovenian Women's Union of America

Slovenian immigrants filled Joliet's mills and quarries, and in 1926 the women organised their own fraternal benefit society, the Slovenska zenska zveza Amerike, to argue for their rights in a country that offered them few. It has run from Joliet ever since and still publishes its magazine Zarja. The name changed to the Slovenian Union of America in 2011.
