Austin votes against joining Chicago and is annexed anyway
1899
Austin, Chicago, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
This was the town hall of Cicero Township. Austin ran the township government and used it to approve a Lake Street elevated extension the rest of the township did not want, so the rest of the township moved to hand Austin over to Chicago instead. The law counted the whole township's ballots rather than Austin's own, and the April 1899 annexation carried even though most Austin voters had rejected it. The park district fieldhouse built here later was modelled on Independence Hall.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
