Asian Pacific Development Center, Aurora's landing pad in 35 languages
1980
Aurora, Colorado
The centre opened in 1980 doing one thing: outpatient mental health counselling for Asian immigrants arriving in metro Denver, much of it refugee resettlement work. Within a few years it had added English classes, job placement and youth programmes, because those turned out to be the same problem. It now supplies interpreters to courts, hospitals and businesses in 35 languages, which is a fair measure of who actually lives along Aurora's Havana corridor.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
