The Southeast Asian Water Festival on the Merrimack
1997
Pawtucketville, Lowell, Massachusetts
Lowell took in one of the largest Cambodian populations in the country after the Khmer Rouge years, alongside Lao, Thai and Vietnamese families. The first Southeast Asian Water Festival was held at this riverside amphitheatre in August 1997, put together by Khmer and Lao community groups with the city health department and UMass Lowell, and about 10,000 people came. It is thought to have been the first water festival of its kind held outside Asia, and it now draws tens of thousands for dragon boat racing on the river.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
