Paolo Soleri coined the word arcology, architecture fused with ecology, and in 1970 began building its prototype on a mesa above the Agua Fria River. The south-facing apses are half-domes that pull in the low winter sun and hold shade through the summer, cast in place by pouring concrete over moulded desert silt and excavating it once cured. There is no grid: the plan folds in on itself so that people keep crossing paths. More than 7,000 people have come through the five-week workshops to help build it, and the foundry that casts its bronze wind bells still funds the work.
