Andrews' raiders spend the night at the Kennesaw House
1862
Marietta, Georgia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
This three storey building beside the Western and Atlantic tracks was a hotel in April 1862, when James Andrews and about twenty Union volunteers checked in for the night. The next morning they boarded a northbound train, waited for the crew to stop for breakfast at Big Shanty and stole the locomotive, starting the 87 mile pursuit known as the Great Locomotive Chase. Andrews and seven others were hanged for it, and several survivors received the first Medals of Honor ever awarded. The building later served as a Confederate hospital and morgue and now holds the Marietta History Center.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
