Andrew Jackson shot in a brawl on the Public Square
1813
Public Square, Nashville
Ralph E. W. Earl · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Jackson had acted as second in a duel that left Jesse Benton shot in the backside, and Jesse's brother Thomas said so publicly, so Jackson came to town promising to horsewhip him. The two parties were staying in rival hotels on the square. Jackson went in with a whip, Thomas drew a pistol, and Jesse fired from the side, putting a slug and a ball into his left shoulder. He bled through two mattresses and refused to let the surgeons take the arm off.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
