Waggaman, named for a senator who lost a duel
1843
Waggaman, Louisiana
This West Bank community carries the name of George Augustus Waggaman, a Whig who held one of Louisiana's United States Senate seats from 1831 to 1835. In March 1843 he faced former New Orleans mayor Denis Prieur on the duelling ground, and by most accounts Waggaman fired wide on purpose while Prieur's shot cut an artery in his leg. He refused to let surgeons take the leg until it was too late and died of gangrene on 23 March.
