Bloody Island, where St. Louis went to shoot each other
1817
East bank opposite downtown, St. Louis
A sandbar in the middle of the river that belonged clearly to neither Missouri nor Illinois, which made it the place to settle a duel without either state's law reaching you. Thomas Hart Benton killed Charles Lucas here in 1817 and went to the Senate for thirty years afterward. Engineering works eventually silted the channel and joined the island to the Illinois bank, so the duelling ground is now dry land under East St. Louis.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
