Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, wild ground next to the mall
1976
Bloomington, Minnesota
This 14,000 acre strip of Minnesota River floodplain became a national wildlife refuge in 1976, one of a small group set aside for people who live in metro areas rather than out past them. It runs southwest from Bloomington toward Henderson. The Bloomington visitor center and two of its trailheads sit a few blocks from the Mall of America, so the parking ramps and the heron rookeries are neighbors.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
