Alpha, the freedmen's town north Dallas grew over
1865
Dallas, Texas
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Freed people founded Alpha in Dallas County in the years right after the Civil War, one of dozens of Black settlements built on the edge of white towns across Texas. It reached its peak in the 1890s and then shrank through the twentieth century as the city closed in around it. The state stopped listing Alpha as a community in 1987 and the ground is now ordinary north Dallas.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
