Alexander Ramsey was the first governor of Minnesota Territory and the second governor of the state. On 9 September 1862, addressing a special session of the legislature during the war with the Dakota, he departed from his prepared text to say the Sioux of Minnesota must be exterminated or driven forever beyond the borders of the state. His limestone house in Irvine Park, finished in 1872 with carved walnut and marble fireplaces, stayed in the family until 1964 and is now a museum run by the state historical society.
