Alexandriana, a monument to the disputed Mecklenburg Declaration
1775
Old Statesville Road, Huntersville, North Carolina
This monument in a county park, on the homesite of John McKnitt Alexander, honours the signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, said to have been adopted on 20 May 1775. No original survives. The text was first published in 1819, from Alexander's recollection, and most historians doubt it existed in that form. The document from that month that does survive is the Mecklenburg Resolves of 31 May, pinned in Charlotte.
