Alan Freed's rock and roll shows at the Brooklyn Paramount

Rapp and Rapp opened this 4,084 seat movie palace in November 1928 with a painted cloud ceiling and a Wurlitzer organ. In the 1950s the disc jockey Alan Freed ran week long rock and roll bills here with Chuck Berry and Fats Domino, teenagers queuing around the block for shows that scandalised the papers. Long Island University bought it in 1960 and played basketball on the floor for forty years before it reopened as a concert hall in 2024.
