A Guastavino tile dome on a Lowell side street
1896
44 Princeton Boulevard, Lowell, Massachusetts
The Spanish immigrant builders Rafael Guastavino and his son patented the interlocking tile vault that holds up the reading room of the Boston Public Library and the ceiling of Grand Central's oyster bar. One of their earliest domes went up in 1896 over a neighbourhood Universalist church in Lowell, 70 feet of masonry with no steel frame under it. The Universalists sold the building in 1973 and it has been St. George Hellenic Orthodox Church since, which means a Greek congregation inherited the dome.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
