A closed state prison on Mound Road reopens as Detroit's city lockup
Detroit, Michigan
![]()
Mound Correctional Facility opened on this site in 1994 and the state closed it in January 2012. Michigan and the city then agreed to bring the same buildings back in August 2013 as the Detroit Detention Center, the central lockup that holds Detroit police bookings. It is staffed jointly by the Department of Corrections and the police department, an arrangement made to cut the number of officers the city had been tying up running its own lockup.
