An Okaloosa County deputy on a stolen car call in November 2023 had a handcuffed man in the back of his patrol vehicle when an acorn fell on the roof. He shouted that he was hit, threw himself to the ground and emptied his weapon into his own car. A sergeant who believed him fired too. The man inside was untouched, and was never charged with anything. Body camera footage released the following February turned it into a meme, by which point the sheriff's office had found the deputy's use of force was not objectively reasonable and he had resigned.
