Diagnosed with lupus at twenty-five and given a few years, O'Connor moved back to her mother's dairy farm and wrote almost everything she is known for in a downstairs bedroom, two hours a day. She kept peafowl, dozens of them, and answered letters about them at length. She died here at thirty-nine.
