Grunters drive a wooden stake into the ground and rub it with a metal bar to summon earthworms to the surface, a folk method unique to this stretch of the Apalachicola National Forest. The festival crowns the state's official worm gruntin' champion each spring in downtown Sopchoppy and has run since the early 2000s. (Held the second Saturday of April; 2027 date approximate.)
