Virginia's largest county fair fills the Rockingham County Fairgrounds each August with livestock shows, a demolition derby, and midway rides. It has run since the late 1940s and draws visitors from across the Shenandoah Valley and beyond.

Ralph Sampson Park hosts this celebration of Black heritage and culture in the Shenandoah Valley each September, with music, food and community vendors.
The world's only recreation of Shakespeare's indoor theatre sits on a side street in Staunton, built to the surviving dimensions in oak, with candlelight chandeliers and no stage lighting at all.
Downtown Staunton turns into a Harry Potter inspired wizarding village for a weekend each fall, with local shops recast as wandmakers, potion sellers, and creature keepers.

The Confederacy, short of men in the valley in May 1864, marched the entire cadet corps of the Virginia Military Institute up from Lexington, some of them fifteen years old, and put them into the line.
