The VMI cadets at New Market
1864
New Market Battlefield, Shenandoah County, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Confederacy, short of men in the valley in May 1864, marched the entire cadet corps of the Virginia Military Institute up from Lexington, some of them fifteen years old, and put them into the line. They took a battery across a rain-soaked field that pulled the boots off their feet, and ten of them died. VMI still calls their names at a roll every year, and the field is preserved as it was.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
