Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway put a stop here in 1904 and the settlement took the Spanish word for orange, after the groves that filled the area and shipped north on that line.
Seven one room schools were scattered across the farms of the Redland, at Eureka, Goulds, Modello, Murray Hill, Princeton, Redland and Silver Palm.
Developers gave this stretch of South Dade its name to sell the idea of retirement, platting roughly 2,300 acres of pine and farmland.
