The North Carolina Fourth of July Festival fills Southport's waterfront with a boat flotilla, parade, and fireworks over nine days culminating on Independence Day. First held in 1795, it is one of the oldest continuously running Fourth of July celebrations in the country. More than seventy events span Southport and neighboring Oak Island each year.

An earthwork fort of sand and timber that absorbed shelling brick could not, and kept Wilmington open for the blockade runners feeding Lee's army long after every other Confederate port had closed.
The plant grows wild only within about seventy-five miles of Wilmington, in wet sandy savanna that burns often enough to keep taller plants down.
