The royal governor built himself the finest public building in the colonies at New Bern in 1770 and taxed backcountry farmers to pay for it, which helped start the Regulator uprising.
Caleb Bradham mixed a digestive tonic at his New Bern pharmacy soda fountain in 1893, called it Brad's Drink, and renamed it Pepsi-Cola five years later after the dyspepsia it claimed to settle.
North Carolina's first town, chartered in 1705, was also briefly home to its most famous resident when Blackbeard took the king's pardon in 1718 and settled here among officials who found him useful.
The state's largest seafood festival lines the Morehead City waterfront with fresh local seafood, live music, and maritime exhibits, drawing more than 200,000 visitors over the weekend.
