Affirmations opened at the end of the 1980s as a lesbian and gay community centre for southeast Michigan, and it anchored Ferndale's turn from a Detroit bedroom suburb into the region's centre of LGBTQ life.

A family Halloween event spread across the first four weekends of October at the Detroit Zoo, with trick-or-treat stations, costumed characters and themed lighting through the zoo grounds.
When it opened in 1928 this was the first zoo in the United States built around bar-less habitats, using moats and ditches to hold animals instead of iron.
This dirt oval was laid out in 1899 for horse racing, on ground bought to give the Michigan State Fair a permanent home.
