The congregation was formed in 1677 by Dutch residents of the town of New Utrecht, a few years after the English took New Netherland, and the burial ground was consecrated in 1654.
Hawkins was sixteen, from East New York, and was in Bensonhurst with his younger brother and two friends on August 23, 1989 when a crowd of between ten and thirty white youths surrounded them, at least seven of them carrying baseball bats.
