Houston area architecture firms compete to build elaborate sand sculptures on East Beach each September, judged for engineering and design as much as looks, drawing more than 10,000 spectators over the weekend. The American Institute of Architects Houston chapter has run it as its signature fundraiser for decades. Teams sometimes spend months designing structures that stand for a single tide.

After the 1900 storm the city built a seventeen-foot concrete wall and then jacked up 2,100 buildings, including a 3,000-ton church, and pumped in sand to raise the whole island beneath them by up to seventeen feet.
