Raising the grade behind the seawall

After the 1900 storm the city built a seventeen-foot concrete wall and then jacked up 2,100 buildings, including a 3,000-ton church, and pumped in sand to raise the whole island beneath them by up to seventeen feet. It is one of the great engineering works of the century and it held in 1915.
