Xerox 914
1959
Rochester, New York
Chester Carlson invented xerography in 1938 and spent years being turned down by every major company. A Rochester photo-paper firm took it on. The 914 was the first plain-paper copier, caught fire often enough to ship with a small extinguisher, and became the most profitable product in American history to that point.
