Thompson shot himself at his Owl Farm compound on February 20, 2005, at 67, at the typewriter, after decades of writing about the place as his fortified home base. That August his ashes were fired from a cannon on top of a 153 foot tower shaped like the double thumbed gonzo fist, built to his own decades old sketch and paid for by Johnny Depp, while Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man played. The farm stays in the family and the tower came down after the funeral.
