Scouting ranch land for what became Blue Origin, Bezos was in a Gazelle helicopter that caught a gust on take-off, clipped a cedar with the rotor, rolled, and came to rest in the shallow water of Calamity Creek. Everyone walked away. He needed stitches. He has said since that it made him think less about death than about how little of what he worried about mattered.
