Wayne, the horse village that stopped growing in 1929

Solomon Dunham settled this ground in 1835, and when the Galena and Chicago Union laid track through in 1850 he put an inn and a store beside the station. His son Mark and several neighbouring farmers built a complex of stables and ran the Fletcher Norman Horse Company, which made the village's name in Percheron draft horses. Cars took the draft horse trade away, the company closed in 1929, and Wayne more or less stopped growing at that point. That is the reason fifty three buildings of the period were still standing together to be listed as a historic district in 1978.
