The oldest part of the fieldstone house dates to 1843, set on a bluff looking across the Hudson at the Palisades. The Roosevelt family took it for two summers around 1870, when Theodore was a boy, and Mark Twain rented it from 1901. Arturo Toscanini lived there during the Second World War. The estate passed to the city and now runs as twenty eight acres of public garden.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
