UPMC closes the Braddock hospital and a civil rights complaint follows
2010
Braddock, Pennsylvania
The hospital opened on Holland Avenue in 1906 and served more than 25 Monongahela Valley communities before UPMC absorbed it in 1996. It stopped accepting patients on 15 January 2010 and closed at the end of that month. Braddock's borough council president filed a complaint with the federal Office for Civil Rights arguing the closure fell disproportionately on a majority Black community, and UPMC later signed a resolution agreement covering transport, health screenings and expanded clinic hours.
