Hattie Louise Bess painted the place orchid purple by accident and kept it. Its back door opened onto the Ryman's alley, so Opry performers crossed between sets and unknown songwriters, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller, drank on credit she kept in a cigar box. The strip of bars around it now runs live music from ten in the morning.
