Three Hawaiian princes bring surfing ashore
1885
San Lorenzo river mouth, Santa Cruz, California
Three teenage Hawaiian princes at school in San Mateo spent a summer here and had boards cut from local redwood, planks of well over a hundred pounds, and rode the river mouth in front of an astonished crowd. It is the first documented surfing on the American mainland. A local paper covered it as a curiosity and then forgot about it for eighty years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
