The Viking ship that sailed to the 1893 fair and never went home
1893
Geneva, Illinois
Norway answered the replica Columbus caravels bound for the World's Columbian Exposition by building an exact copy of the Gokstad ship, dug out of a burial mound in 1880, and sailing it across the Atlantic with twelve men aboard under Magnus Andersen. It reached Chicago in 1893 and the argument it was making, that Norsemen got here first, went over well. Afterwards nobody quite owned it. It sat in Lincoln Park under a shed for decades collecting pigeon mess and ended up parked in a fraternal campground in Geneva, where volunteers have been trying to get it under a roof ever since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
