Robert Asp, a guidance counsellor, spent years building a seventy-six-foot Viking ship inside a disused potato warehouse, on the theory that his ancestors had crossed in one and so could he. He sailed it once on Lake Superior, was diagnosed with leukaemia and died in 1980. His children and a crew took it to Bergen two years later, six thousand miles across the North Atlantic, and it is kept in a building shaped around it.
