The Ukrainian American Archives, a basement collection that grew into a museum
1958
Hamtramck, Michigan
Ukrainians who reached Detroit as refugees after the Second World War started this collection in a basement in 1958 to keep folk art, documents, photographs and Ukrainian language books together in one place. It outgrew the basement, then outgrew a small former bank building, and moved into a 13,500 square foot building in 2017. It sits a short walk from the Hamtramck Historical Museum and the Polish Art Center.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
