The Evanston Art Center is founded over tea, days before the crash
1929
Evanston, Illinois
Alice Riley hosted an afternoon tea on Sheridan Road on 28 October 1929 to work out how to honour Julia Ferguson, an art teacher the town had shared for years. Twenty civic groups backed the result, which spent its first fourteen years in the basement of the old public library, later leased the Harley Clarke mansion by the lighthouse, and moved to Central Street in 2015. It is now one of the oldest and largest art centres in Illinois.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
