From 1959 to 1961 the psychologist Milton Rokeach housed three patients together here, Clyde Benson, Joseph Cassel and Leon Gabor, because each of them believed he was Jesus Christ. Rokeach had taken the idea from a magazine piece about two women who both believed they were the Virgin Mary, and wanted to see whether confronting the men with each other would break the belief. It did not: the record shows almost no change, and one man improved only briefly. The hospital sat at Platt and Willis Roads in York Township and took the Ypsilanti name only because that was its telephone exchange.
