The Tamiami Trail cuts the Everglades

Thirteen years of dredging and dynamite through sawgrass and limestone to link Tampa to Miami, men working from barges, sleeping on them, dynamiting a channel and using the spoil as roadbed. It also acted as a dam across the entire width of the Everglades, cutting the sheet flow south, and undoing that is now the largest and most expensive part of the restoration. The smallest post office in America sits beside it in a former irrigation shed.
