Before pumps could be trusted to keep pressure steady, cities put a tall open pipe on the main to absorb the surge, and St. Louis dressed three of them up as monuments: a Corinthian column on Grand, a red brick Romanesque tower on Compton Hill, a white one on Bissell. Seven such standpipes survive in the United States and this city has three of them. None has done any work since 1912.
