The oldest ornamental water tower in the world, a Greek temple of a pumping station built to make the idea of drinking from the muddy Ohio palatable to a nervous public, a hundred-and-eighty-foot standpipe dressed in Corinthian columns and classical statues. The water it pumped was foul for decades until the company's own chemist worked out modern filtration here, which cut the city's death rate outright.
