The St. Johns is the longest river in Florida and it runs north, which few American rivers do, covering 310 miles from marshes in the centre of the state to this mouth at Mayport. It falls less than 30 feet over that entire distance and drifts at roughly a third of a mile an hour, slow enough that it is usually described as lazy rather than as a current. Jean Ribault brought French ships in over this bar in May 1562 and named it the River of May.
