The St. Albans raid

Twenty-one Confederate soldiers who had slipped in from Canada robbed all three of St. Albans' banks at once in October 1864, announced the town was captured property of the Confederacy, and fled back over the border with over $200,000. It was the northernmost land action of the Civil War, fought four hundred miles from the nearest front. Canada tried them and let them keep the money, which Vermont has not entirely forgiven.
